Liverpool 16/11/10
It was a beautiful day in Liverpool.

The Disappearance. Week 7.
Self portraiture project based on disguise and identity.
For the reading week preparation project, I experimented with several childhood photos, looking at different ways to destroy and alter them - including burning, blacking out faces and figures and scraping or scratching. I also did a few collages of photos of my face in the style of Picasso - distortion the proportions and arrangement of my features by taking it apart and putting it back together again.
Monday
In groups we directed each other to arrange lighting, lenses and light masks for self portraits. We used colour and light to evoke certain emotions and connotations. I found that intense, cold light gives the feeling of isolation and institutionalisation.
Tuesday
Today we attached things to and extended ourselves as well as altering the light and colour. Painting my face, attaching paper and things to my face, blending into the background. I continued my theme of isolation by using similar cold lighting and intense shadows but painted my face white. Doing this made me looked washed out and ill as well as making me look slightly more invisible, expressionless and zombie-like.
Thursday
Film.
Theme of isolation and feeling trapped. Flickery and unsteady effect on the video, flashing and flickering between shots, objects/figures disappearing and appearing again using stop-motion style, pausing video while recording. Bright intense lighting for institution feel, white background, empty room.

Size and Scale
I have a collection of around 70 clear glass bottles, and until this project I had no idea what I wanted to do with them. They were the perfect medium for a large scale drawing, they look beautiful together, especially with the Autumn setting and sunset.
